Grauzone presents: GRAUFILM w/ scores by Amenra and Sqürl, Boy Harsher's The Runner and more.

GRAUZONE festival announces the first names of the film programme for the upcoming 9th edition which will take place on Friday 11 & Saturday 12 February in The Hague.

Grauzone festival is growing and the number of locations is being expanded with the Nieuwe Kerk and Filmhuis next to it, in addition to locations such as Paard, Het Koorenhuis, The Grey Space In The Middle. In addition, there will be an immersive GRAUKUNST exhibition, performances, an extensive GRAUFILM program including exclusive screenings and live soundtracks to cult and surrealist films.

Belgian doom band Amenra continue to explore the boundaries between music and art, composing a soundtrack to the Russian cult movie The Mirror by Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky playing live on location at Grauzone festival 2022. You’re in for a real treat as this event, revolving around family, spirituality and loss, is a Dutch premiere and one of the first times Amenra will perform this!

Exclusive for Grauzone, Sqürl, the band made up of New York director / musician Jim Jarmusch and film producer Carter Logan, land their only show in the Netherlands in the midst of their European tour. Together the pair compose experimental avant-garde music with distortion, drones, tape loops, drum solos and guitar feedback. During Grauzone festival 2022 Sqürl pay tribute to surrealist filmmaker, photographer and painter Man Ray (1890-1976). Sqürl score four of his films, including L'Etoile De Mer (1928), Emak Bakia (1926), Retour a la Raison (1923) and Les Mysteres Du Chateau Du De (1929). This is a special moment for Grauzone, also because the festival's artwork is inspired by the atmosphere and style of Man Ray. This will mark Sqürl’s only show in the Netherlands in the midst of their European tour.

The Runner (Original Soundtrack) is both a short film and its musical eight-track counterpart written during 2020 by Northampton, US-based duo Boy Harsher. The darkwave duo made up of vocalist Jae Matthews and producer Augustus Muller wrote, produced and directed the horror film which explores the themes of lust, seduction and compulsion. The Runner is the result of scary stories shared in a van to stay awake at night while driving through the icy Midwest during wintertime. The Runner will be screened at Grauzone festival 2022 for the first time in the Netherlands.

Sisters with Transistors is the untold story of female pioneers in electronic music with appearances by names such as Cosey Fanni Tutti, who played Grauzone back in 2014. Narrated by avant-garde artist, composer and film director Laurie Anderson, the film examines how hard it was for women to be taken seriously as creators as well as represents the radical sounds in electronics enabled by technology.

The British film Rebel Dykes follows a close group of friends made up of artists, performers, musicians and activists during the time after Margaret Thatcher’s election in a post-punk London in the mid-80s. Directed by Harri Shanahan and Sîan Williams, Rebel Dykes is told through a mix of animation, archive footage, photographs and interviews with the people from the radical scene of squatters, BDSM nightclubs, anti-Thatcher rallies and protests challenging the lack of action around the AIDS epidemic.
