Sqürl (Jim Jarmusch & Carter Logan) announced for Grauzone festival 2022

Grauzone festival has just completed its very successful online edition and is already unveiling the first act for the Grauzone 2022 line up: SQÜRL. The musical project of the New York film director Jim Jarmusch. Grauzone will take place on 11 and 12 February 2022 at various locations in The Hague and SQÜRL on 11 February. There will also be a pre-party on February 10th and an extensive art program under the name GRAUKUNST.

Sqürl consists of New York director / musician Jim Jarmusch and film producer Carter Logan and create exciting, experimental avant-garde with distortion, drones, tape loops, drum solos, and guitar feedback. A style that lends itself perfectly as a film score. Sqürl won the award for best soundtrack in Cannes for Only Lovers Left Alive (2014) together with the Dutch lute player Jozef van Wissem (in 2020 and 2021 on Grauzone). During their small European tour, this will be their only Dutch show.

Man Ray
Sqürl pays tribute to the surrealist filmmaker, photographer and painter Man Ray (1890-1976). They play a live soundtrack to four of his films; L'Etoile De Mer (1928), Emak Bakia (1926), Retour a la Raison (1923) and Les Mysteres Du Chateau Du De (1929). This is a special moment for Grauzone, also because the festival's artwork is inspired by the atmosphere and style of Man Ray.

Jim Jarmusch
We mainly know Jim Jarmusch as the filmmaker of classics such as Down By Law (1986), Stranger Than Paradise (1983), Broken Flowers, Paterson (2016) and Only Lovers Left Alive (2014). Music always plays a prominent role in his films and he likes to reserve (guest) roles for his musical heroes such as Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Screamin 'Jay Hawkins, Joe Strummer and the White Stripes.

The Sqürl soundtrack for Only Lovers Left Alive was re-released last month on the New York label Sacred Bones, a label with many acts that have performed on Grauzone (Soft Moon, Black Marble, Marissa Nadler, Psychic TV, Alan Vega).

Multidisciplinary festival
In 2020 Grauzone already organized a live film score (A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick) with the Hague musician / producer Legowelt. With these types of projects, Grauzone wants to further broaden its multidisciplinary character.
